My Review of Stephen Lynch's My Old Heart Tour Featuring New Music!

Last night Stephen Lynch stopped at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ.  It was all general admission so chairs were first come, first served.  That also meant a line around the goddamn building when I got there 30 minutes before the doors opened.  Then we waited another half hour after the doors opened to get inside, so that was fun to do in January.

If you're not a fan I suggest you watch this video so you can learn why you're wrong and stupid:
Steve (we're buddies now, this is my second time seeing him) played 8 new songs which I didn't record since I'm not an asshole.  Although I did write down the song names since I'm a nice guy-
1- My Old Heart (Neil Young Ripoff 1)
2- Omaha (Neil Young Ripoff 2)
3- The Birthday Song*
4- Sweaty Dollar Bills
5- Cocaine*
6- Denial*
7- Summer Song*
8- Dead Sexy*

*- Steve didn't announce the name of the song I guess based on the chorus

The Neil Young Ripoff Saga and Dead Sexy got the biggest laughs/ groans so I'm assuming those will be in regular rotation for the future.
His last album, Lion, was with a full backing band, while most of his previous work has mostly been just him with a guitar.  The new songs were mostly him, some with his friend Rod Cone harmonizing and playing some giant melodica-type instrument.
The set lasted almost 2 hours and was nonstop laughter even though he didn't play The Bowling Song.  Tennessee got a bit of a groan when he mentioned MLK since the show was on MLK Day but like Steve said "It's history!" so it's ok to laugh.  Overall I give the show a 9/10.  My only gripe is that he didn't play Vanilla Ice Cream since a) I'm a blogger and b) I was going to yell out Roger Ebert!  Oh well,  Hopefully next time.
